DRYER VENT CLEANING
Dryer vents require regular inspection and cleaning. “According to the National Fire Protection Association, approximately 3,000 dryers catch fire each year. About one-third of those fires are caused by failing to clean your clothes dryer, leading to clogged dryer vents. These fires cause an estimated $238 million in property damage yearly.”
As your clothes dry, tiny bits of lint (or that wayward Kleenex or piece of paper) come off the clothes. Much of this lint is captured in the lint screen. Unfortunately, not all the lint is caught and it passes through this screen. As a result, this escaping lint begins to build up on the inside of the vent and exterior vent cover and fins. If you allow these escaping particles to build up, they will, subsequently, clog the vent.
As you use your dryer, it begins to heat up the contents in the vent and, consequently, can combust and cause a fire in your home. Additionally, a clean vent helps protect and extend the life of your dryer by allowing it to operate at its optimum.
How do you know if lint is building up in your vent? Sometimes, it is not easy to move your dryer out to inspect the vent. Here are a few clues to watch out for:
- Your dryer feels “very” hot to the touch while operating
- The dryer is taking longer than usual to dry your clothes
- Clothes are coming out consistently damp
- There is a “musty” smell while the dryer is running
- If you look outside by the vent cover, you see a build up of lint on the cover fins and on the ground.
If you have time on your hands and are adept at keeping a consistent cleaning schedule, you can perform the cleaning yourself. A professional might be a better fit should you not have the time to do the work yourself, you have a tough/heavy to move dryer, or you have an extensive or hard to reach venting system. In short, having us come out will ultimately save you time and money.
Industry standard recommendations that a family of four should have their dry vents inspected and cleaned at least once every two years. If more than four in a family, it is recommended to have it cleaned at least once a year.
